The winds of change are blowing and a new adventure looms 

Off the Grid on Kangaroo Island

Starting March 2019

Join our adventure as we move into our new home March 2019 with an existing off the grid solar system, a solar hot water system and 95,000 litres of water.

Graham has plans to upgrade the solar system and I thought it would be interesting to document the solar upgrade and life off the grid.  Stay tuned.

·      Capacity is 830 Amp Hours
·      20 KW Storage
·      Uses 20-25% under heavy load
·      Panels are 2.4KW
·      Maximum output 1600 Watts continuous
·      5000 Watts on Surge

The Pizza Oven

Sanders on KI - Pizza Oven In the same way the kitchen is the heart of a home,   in Tasmania we found our pizza oven was the heart of our outside world so  Graham was very keen to build our new pizza oven here in Kangaroo Island. Memories from  Our Tassie Pizza Wall of Fame. It was so much more than being fabulous for cooking all sorts of things - pizza of course, Montreal style bagels, roasts, stews, deserts, and of course our annual Christmas Pig in the Pizza Oven.  Just watching the fire flicker, or the gentle glow of coals not only provided warmth and ambiance  it kept us outside in all seasons. THE PROJECT The location was not all about the view. Graham considered where the predominant winds came from and the best angle for the oven, then once the decision was made, the collection of rocks started. Then he prepared the land for the base.  He measured the footprint, dug out the ground, and spread gravel and sand, to prepare for the pavers.

The clean up and transformation begins

Possession Date  - 6th March 2019   The planets aligned and we found we could make a last minute trip to be there for the handover. (Sneaking in an opportunity have a quick surprise visit with our kids and grandchildren, an extra bonus.) It felt strangely odd staying in an Air BnB when we had a house we now owned 10 minutes away, however we had agreed to let the previous owner stay on for a few weeks as she needed more time for her uplift to be scheduled.  It as a whirl wind trip to check the property, and get the run down on how things worked.  We were also appreciative that Elizabeth introduced us to some of the neighbours and locals, then it was time to head back to Tassie. Road Trip to see the old owner off and paint Booking "Blue Truck" (As we call Graham's '56 Ford F100) and the boat on the Spirit of Tasmania was tricky as the ferry was booked out for overheight until the end of April.
